Haiti Support Art Auction

The powerHouse Arena hosts a unique collaboration between artist Isaiah King and photojournalist Q. Sakamaki with the intention of using art to help in offering aid to the victims of Haiti’s earthquake. King has created a series of large woodblock portraits based on Sakamaki’s photographs taken at Pont-Rouge refugee camp shortly after the earthquake of January 12, 2010. Isaiah’s prints and Q.’s photographs will be auctioned at the charity event /artist reception on September 9th. Proceeds from the auction will go to benefit The Haitian People’s Support Project and Solidarite Haitienne.

Isaiah King

Isaiah King is a Canadian-born artist and graphic designer living and working in New York City. He has a degree in Graphic Design and Printmaking from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Isaiah’s self-directed design projects build upon an assertion that art and design can play an important role in the elevation of deeper public discourse on social issues. His printmaking and drawing works pursue an ongoing study of the human form in all its complex, emotive facets. Employing intaglio, lithography, screen-printing, relief-printing and painting, Isaiah applies diverse and aggressive mark making into his figure studies.
Isaiah’s printmaking work has been exhibited in galleries in New York City, Boston and Ottawa, Canada. His social justice posters have been shown in California in collaboration with The Center for the Study of Political Graphics and one of Isaiah’s political posters was recently published in Taschen’s Design for Obama edited by Spike Lee. www.ikingdesign.com

Q. Sakamaki

Q. Sakamaki is a Japanese photographer based in New York. He holds a Masters degree in International Affairs from Columbia University concentrating on Conflict Resolution and Human Rights. Since the late 80s, Q. has photographed New York’s political, social landscape, such as issues of AIDS, homelessness, and street crime, focusing on people suffering and human rights violations in the related poverty, discrimination, and violence.

Sakamaki has covered the war-stories of Afghanistan, Israel/Palestine, Algeria, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Liberia, Sri Lanka and others. He focuses on how war affects ordinary civilians, particularly children. His photographs have appeared in books and magazines worldwide including Time, Newsweek, Life, Stern, and L’espresso, and have been the subject of solo shows in New York and Tokyo. He has received numerous awards, including World Press Photo, Overseas Press Club, Pictures of The Year International, Days International Photojournalism Award and more.

He has published three books, including Palestine and his video footage used in the film, Liberia: An Uncivil War was nominated for the 26th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards in 2005. www.qsakamaki.com
