What is Agitproject?

Agitproject is a lot of different things, all of which change depending on when you ask me. At it’s core Agitproject came from an interest in creating hip, interesting art and design that promotes discussion on relevant social, political or community issues. I was interested in producing these designs into pop culture commodities such as t-shirts, stickers and posters, which have come to be the way many of us present ourselves, our ideas (or our brand loyalty) to the outside world. The name is taken from the term “agitprop” a term originating in post-revolution Russia that combines the terms Agitation and Propaganda.

What is Agitproject now?

I’ve always been a massive fan of graphic t-shirts, so right now Agitproject is an online shirt boutique that houses not only my social commentary designs but also a collection of orphan designs and doodles that I’ve always wanted to put on shirts.

What do I want Agitproject to be I the future?

I would like Agitproject to eventually expand into a collaborative venture networking and showcasing artists and designers who share my passion for bringing intelligent discourse plus great design into our everyday public, consumer realities.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by art and design that provokes a strong reaction, positive or negative. Subtlety is not my thing. I like bitter beer, hard liquor, stinky cheese, spicy, rich and fattening food, upsetting films and thought provoking art. I am inspired by music, and although I work in visual mediums I think music is the art that plays the largest role in my everyday life. I love movies. I am inspired by the great many designers who belong to a long tradition of examining our roles and responsibilities as pop-culture purveyors and the practitioners of the art of mass communication.

West coast artist, Carey Haider, plays many roles: photographer, animal lover, instigator. He loves taxidermy and refuses to be tied to one medium, delving in fashion design (including his own D.I.Y line Blacktooth), photo shoots and film projects, as well as graphic design. Haider seeks extremes and stimulation. His style, like his influences, is a mélange of fresh and vintage, originality and appropriation, and themes light to serious—humor to death and destruction to genitalia and Mickey Mouse. He took time to answer some questions via email for DPM about his work, tee for the Artist Series, and random prized possessions. When most adolescent boys were playing video games in their basement, Damion Silver knew he was meant for graphic design. At 14 he started a ‘half-assed’ business with friends in his industrial hometown, designing t-shirts to sell at skateboarding contests, and has been freelancing since then. The Connecticut native took the time to have a phone convo with DPM about his contribution to the Artist Series, and how he has become even more business savvy since his pubescent days. A senior designer at Converse, he has also had international success at both street and commercial art. His style is multi-layered, -medium, and –genre in painting, collage, wood, found images, drawing, and glass. Elli Egilsson, a.k.a. AC Bananas, is a self-taught illustrator. Growing up in Reykjavik, Iceland, the son of an artist and flight attendant left the isle in ’08 to get out of a repetitious Groundhog Day-esque rut and moved to the UK, where he’s been collaborating on projects with musicians and producers, creating new typefaces, and drawing monsters and naked ladies, in addition to dating a hot/talented photographer. Tho he claims a penchant for swearing, his vulgarities were occasional in his email interview with DPM on his contribution to the Artist Series. These beautiful creations are the work of artist Ray Villafane. He began carving pumpkins on a lark for his art students in a small rural school district in Michigan. The hobby changed his life as he gained a viral following online and unlocked his genuine love of sculpting. Here are images of pumpkin carvings Villafane created over the past five years.

Parliament of Owls is an independent design collective headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. This set of coasters marks the launch of The Cranky Pressman’s new line of ready-made coaster dies. Far less crotchety than they purport, Cranky and his crew crafted the copy and the concept: a series of seaside dwelling elderly folk called “The Coasters” with a penchant for booze and old timey hobbies. This fulfilled pretty much everything we love as a collective: letterpress, illustration, snappy copy, noodly details and octogenarians. The four coaster set is wrapped in a bellyband with additional verbose copy and detail.
